Dennis and I ascended Epaulet from the north, beginning at the western end of the lowest switchback on Evans' south side. This gentle slope is covered with grass and rocks. There were quite a few good sized quartz rocks that would have looked great in my garden, had I been able to lift them and carry them back to the car. There are a couple of good sized boulder clusters at the summit, and trying to choose the highest one took a little time. One reminded me of the "Stone Table" in C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Meanwhile, the clouds were building, and beginning to rumble. Dennis and I decided to get some pictures taken, and get back to the car as quickly as we could. We had wanted to hike over and catch Mount Rosalie, but the thought of being zapped killed that idea. We practically ran down the slope to the Mt. Evans road, and hiked rather quickly back to Summit Lake. By the time we got there, we were seeing snow falling near Epaulet, and lightning to the east. Fortunately, the clouds stayed away from us. |
